Chief Executive – Homeless Services Ministry

The largest emergency shelter and life-transformation center in the State of Kansas for men is recruiting a Christ-centered individual to lead its ministry of rescue, redemption and restoration.   The selected candidate will oversee a $3 million ministry, staffed by 28 full-time and seven part-time co-workers, providing life-altering services to more than 1,700 men and hundreds of families each year. 

Once hired by the Union Rescue Mission (URM) board, the individual will serve as CEO-designate, sharing leadership responsibilities for several months with the Mission’s out-going chief executive.  Upon his retirement, the CEO-designate will assume all operational and management duties, reporting to an 11-member board of directors. 

Role: 

The CEO is accountable for gathering and safeguarding the resources of the organization; assembling, coaching and inspiring a team of co-workers devoted to serving the homeless and impoverished, and to foster a Christ-honoring organization that exemplifies transparency, integrity and accountability.  

Shared Responsibility: 

URM considers every position one of ministry. Therefore, it is essential that the CEO, like all other employees, has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and subscribes to the Mission’s Statement of Faith.  The CEO must also be willing to lead and/or participate in bible study, prayer, devotions and sharing of the Gospel.   

General Duties: 

-Vision Leadership 

Working in concert with the Board of Directors, the CEO articulates and preserves the Mission’s concept for the rescue and restoration of hungry, hurting, homeless and addicted members of the community.   The CEO encourages individuals, churches and businesses to embrace and support the Mission’s vision.   

-Program Leadership 

The CEO oversees the establishment and implementation of ministry services to end human suffering and stimulate human flourishing, with the ultimate goal of Gospel-powered life transformation. 

-Fiscal Leadership 

The CEO directs the fundraising activities of URM to secure the required ministry resources, both financial and material, that are needed by URM for today as well as tomorrow. 

-Steward Leadership 

The CEO functions as the board’s overseer, protecting and growing the assets of the ministry, to include the development of professional staff, operation within approved budgets, and adherence to all financial policies established by the board. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

REQUIRED

-Experience, understanding and knowledge of boardmanship, fundraising, fiscal controls, program development, and public relations.

-A servant’s heart for both people and ministry.

-Superb writing, communication and interpersonal skills.

-Minimum of five years of executive-level leadership experience.

-Sound judgment and decision-making in meeting organizational objectives.

-Four-year degree.

-Commitment to maintain a public and private life with an indisputable reputation within the community.

-Successful passage of pre-employment drug and criminal background screenings.

-Acceptance of URM’s Statement of Faith and Core Values.

PREFERRED

-Leadership experience at a Christian, social services or non-profit organization.

-Credentials and/or prior work in aligned fields such as addiction recovery, pastoral care, prison ministry or poverty reduction.

-Masters degree (business, divinity, social work).
