URM Announces Plans For Supportive Housing

Graduates of the Union Rescue Mission’s discipleship and recovery programs will have a smoother transition back into society when the Mission completes its recently-announced Faithfully Forward campaign.

Mission leaders unveiled plans for a 24-unit housing complex, known as Eagles Wing, that will be built on URM’s six-acre campus on North Hillside.  The $3.5 million project will include one-bedroom and studio apartments for men who complete one of the Mission’s many rehabilitation programs.  The project also includes new administrative offices and a community room that will double as a storm shelter.

“We’ve realized that obtaining affordable and suitable housing is one of the barriers our men face when they are about to leave our shelter,” explained Denny Bender, the Mission’s executive director.  “Eagles Wing will provide that bridge as our graduates transition from homelessness to contributing roles in our community.”

Union Rescue Mission has raised nearly 90 percent of the cost of the project through support from foundations, churches, and individuals.  An Affordable Housing Program grant from FHLBTopeka has also been obtained.  Construction is projected to start next spring with an April 2019 completion date.
